Joe is a passionate drum coach who brings a strong background in jazz performance and a love for helping students grow as musicians. He is currently studying a Bachelor of Jazz Performance (Drumset) at the Jazz Music Institute and expects to complete his degree in 2026. Through his studies and additional experiences, including time spent learning in New York, Joe continues to deepen his musical knowledge and bring fresh ideas into his teaching.
Joe teaches a wide range of styles including jazz, blues, pop/rock, funk, R&B/soul, and reggae. He helps students develop strong musical foundations through skills such as brush technique, Moeller technique, four-way independence, and Afro-Cuban and Latin rhythms. Alongside drum technique, he also supports students in building broader musicianship with ear training and sight reading.
As an active performer, Joe plays live jazz and has performed regularly at the Brisbane Jazz Club. His playing is inspired by legendary drummers such as Tony Williams, Max Roach, and Elvin Jones, along with modern influences including Cory Henry and the Funk Apostles and Dennis Chambers. He also draws inspiration from big band traditions like the Count Basie Orchestra, Mel Lewis, and Thad Jones, as well as classic funk and soul artists such as The Meters and James Brown.
Joe’s teaching approach focuses on building strong fundamentals while encouraging creativity and confidence. He aims to create a supportive and focused environment where students feel motivated, challenged, and proud of their progress. By developing solid technique, a strong sense of time, and musical awareness, Joe helps students build skills that support long-term musical growth.
Having experienced the impact that great teachers can have, Joe chose a career in music education to pass that inspiration on. He enjoys helping students develop independence, confidence, and a genuine love for music, and finds it incredibly rewarding to watch their progress over time.
