Meet Nikolai also known as Niko, a dedicated drum coach at Sono School of Music, specialising in a diverse array of genres including blues, pop/rock, funk, metal, R&B/soul, jazz, and reggae. With a strong foundation in various drumming techniques, Niko offers comprehensive instruction tailored to meet the needs of drummers at all levels.

Holding a Diploma of Music Performance from TAFE Queensland, Niko is proficient in ear training and composition, with a particular talent for transcribing rhythms by ear. He has experience in vocal training and plays bass at a functional level, allowing him to bring a well-rounded musical perspective to his lessons.

Niko draws inspiration from a broad range of artists across genres, with funk influences from Hiatus Kaiyote, Knower, Crumb, and Vulfpeck. His jazz fusion inspirations include Tigran Hamasyan, Thank You Scientist, Bent Knee, and Sungazer, while rock and metal influences come from Paramore, Gojira, Primus, and Twelve Foot Ninja. This eclectic mix informs his teaching style and helps him connect with clients’ diverse musical interests.

As a performer, Niko is a member of the band Worm Girlz, an indie rock/pop punk group that has gained recognition for their energetic live performances. The band has been played Festivals such as the 2024 St Jerome’s Laneway in Sydney and opened for iconic acts such as Spiderbait at The Fortitude Music Hall the same year. Since forming in 2023, Worm Girlz has released four singles, showcasing their dynamic sound and engaging stage presence.

Niko’s goal is to help individuals unlock their musical potential, whether they are playing or simply enjoying music. He finds immense satisfaction in facilitating this journey through drumming, which he considers his favourite instrument. His mission is to make music accessible and tangible for everyone, challenging the notion that musicality is solely a matter of innate talent. He believes that understanding and appreciating music on a deeper level is achievable for all.
